The 2020 model of the Buick Encore continues the first generation of Encores that began in 2013. There are a few small changes, like a shuffling of available options on Sport Touring trim and one of the engine options being discontinued. But overall, the Buick Encore continues to be the same tech-friendly, subcompact crossover SUV it’s been for years.
The big news this year is the introduction of the all-new 2020 Buick Encore GX. What’s the GX? Though the Encore and Encore GX share the same name, the Encore GX is a car model in its own right. For starters, the Encore GX is a little larger than the Encore but a little smaller than the mid-size Envision. Buick has described the Encore GX as being the same size as the Jeep Compass. Does this mean the Buick Encore is being phased out in favor of the Encore GX? Not at all. Nissan has done something similar with the Rogue and Rogue Sport. Think of it as familiar branding to introduce you to something new.
Why Should I Buy a Buick Encore?
Besides being small and, as a result, eco-friendly, the Encore’s claim to fame is tech features. A lot of manufacturers think drivers of subcompacts don’t want or need lots of tech, for whatever reason. But Buick doesn’t make that same mistake. On the Encore, standard features include all the must-haves, including Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity, a Wi-Fi hotspot, Bluetooth, and USB connections. Plus, you can upgrade your Encore with remote engine start and a heated steering wheel.
Any Downsides?
Any Downsides? As you might imagine for a subcompact, seating is cozy in the Buick Encore. And there’s not a ton of storage space either. There’s just 18.8 cubic feet or 48.4 cubes with the rear seats down. But that’s the tradeoff because where else can you get a turbocharged engine and still get 25 city miles and 30 highway miles per gallon? That small size isn’t a flaw; it’s a feature. The Encore becomes a turn-on-a-dime, fuel-efficient peppy car. But that’s certainly not for everyone, especially those with big families or big gear.
Which Trim Level Is Right for Me?
Which Trim Level Is Right for Me? You have your choice of four trim levels: 1SV (or base), Preferred, Sport Touring and Essence. The Buick Encore starts at just $23,200 but the top-of-the-line Encore Essence isn’t that much more at $29,300. That’s the one we recommend because where else are you going to get premium leather seating, all-wheel drive, heated seats and steering wheel, fog lamps, and more at such a low price point? And if you’re still a little under budget, throw in the Experience package to add a sunroof, navigation and unique 18-inch alloy wheels.
