The Chevy Silverado 1500 has been completely redesigned for the 2019 model year. This truck is so popular, it’s worth taking the time to look at it from every angle. In this article, we set our sights on two particular trim levels: the Silverado LT and RST. These two trims sit right above the Work Truck (WT), and they are almost sure to be the most popular with buyers, since they have a good mix of affordability with features. But which of them is right for you? That’s the question we hope to answer.
Cabin Tech
We’ll start off with an easy one. Which trim level has the tech you want? While the WT is a barebones workhorse offering only 2-speaker audio system, 3.5-inch driver information screen, and 12-volt power outlet, the LT and RST pile on the features.
The 2019 Silverado 1500 LT offers standard features like Wi-Fi hotspot, 4.2-inch driver information screen, automatic start/stop, Chevrolet Connected Access, and tailgate with EZ Lift assist. And, yes, you still get that power outlet. If that sounds like all you need, then you’re done. For those who want a little more, there’s the RST trim level. There you get standard features that include a second 12-volt rear power outlet (this one in the back row), a cargo bed, LED lighting, keyless open and start, remote start, and tailgate with power lock and release to go with that EZ lift assist. Do you need those extra features? You decide.
Under the Hood
This one is simple. In terms of engine options, you have the exact same choice to make whether you go with the LT or RST. There’s a 5.3-liter V8 offering 355 horsepower and 383 pound-feet of torque. Or you can pay a little more to swap that out for a 2.7-liter turbocharged four-cylinder with 310 horsepower and 348 pound-feet of torque. You’re probably looking at those numbers and wondering why you’d pay more for less horsepower and torque. The key word here is turbocharged. A turbocharger boosts the engine’s performance in a big way, which, in context, means that the 2.7-liter here is the superior engine.
Price
Of course, a truck’s price is a big factor. If it wasn’t we’d hands down recommend the RST every time. The 2019 Silverado 1500 LT starts at just $38,395, a steal in the full-size pickup truck class, especially for a mid-tier trim level. Meanwhile, the RST is only marginally more expensive, starting at $40,295. That’s a very modest increase in price, and depending on how much you value those extra features, that might be worth it. Every equipment package available on the LT is also available on the RST, with just one exception. That’s the Z71 Off-Road package, so if you like the off-roading lifestyle, the LT might be a better fit for you, or you could just go all in and get the Silverado High Country.
