The Chevy Colorado or Toyota Tacoma might be the household names in the compact pickup class. But the 2019 GMC Canyon deserves a spot on that stage right beside them. The Canyon has the power, acceleration, comfort, interior quality, rugged exterior, and cabin technology of its rivals, for the same or a lower price. If you're not familiar with the GMC Canyon, read on. This guide will introduce you to this stalwart compact pickup that deserves a lot more attention.
What's New for 2019?
For those familiar with the model, there are a number of updates and innovations this year that make the GMC Canyon worth looking at again. Interior technology just got a lot better, with a new infotainment interface, plus standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The rearview camera just got better on most trim levels, now sporting a higher resolution.
Outstanding Interior Quality
The GMC Canyon looks very much like a Chevy Colorado, but with a nicer cabin. You'll probably be surprised how great the Canyon looks, considering we're talking about a truck that starts at just $21,400. This GMC is at least as nice as the interiors of many SUVs and sedans. The single overriding feeling is that everything is nicely apportioned and in its place. There are a few hard plastics, but mostly you'll find pleasing materials within.
If you want to maximize the cabin luxury, go for the Canyon Denali. Black leather with white stitching, exclusive Denali badging, leather-wrapped steering wheel, heated and ventilated front seats, and plenty of in-cabin storage like a large center console and a rear folding split bench with underseat storage. The Denali only comes in Crew Cab configuration, but that just means you can share the luxury with more of your friends.
Power and Towing
The GMC Canyon comes with a standard 200-horsepower four-cylinder engine. But if you're doing hard work or playing hard, we recommend upgrading to the 308-horsepower V6 or the 181-horsepower turbodiesel, which puts out nearly 370 pound-feet of torque. You get outstanding fuel economy with the turbodiesel-20 city miles and 30 highway miles per gallon -as well as some of the best towing numbers in the class. The Canyon can tow up to 7,700 pounds and haul up to 1,605 pounds. Finally, it's fun to watch people's eye bulge when you go zero to 60 in just 6.3 seconds.
Truck Tough But Easy to Drive
You'll be happy with the performance of the 2019 GMC Canyon. But it's not just that: braking is tidy, steering is precise, handling is confident, and shifting is smooth. In other words, the Canyon is built tough as a truck, but tuned like a car. That means that just about anyone can drive the Canyon with confidence. Leave the teeth-chattering, body-rolling, barebones workhorses to the professionals. The Canyon will get done what you need while giving you a smooth, reliable ride. What more could you ask for?
